Unfortunately, French Bulldogs are unable to swim and should never be allowed in the water unaided and unsupervised. The reason they are unable to swim is because of their Brachycephaly. This makes it hard for them to keep their heads above water. However, they can be taught to swim aided by special life jackets.

<p style=”text-align: left;”>I have 3 french bulldogs, all 3 of them are good swimmers. I spent months teaching them to swim in shallow water and now they swim in Lake Tahoe and the surrounding rivers on almost a daily basis in the spring, summer and fall. It’s true that Frenchies are not typically suited for swimming but I know various that are strong swimmers. It takes time and helps if you have another dog show them how it’s done. Preferably another Frenchie with swimming abilities. Come on up to Tahoe and I’ll let my pack give your Frenchie swimming lessons.</p>
