What Foods Are Prohibited For My French Bulldog?

Feeding your dog is one thing you shouldn’t skimp on. Poor nutrition can shorten your canine’s life expectancy, as well as deteriorate their health in the medium to long term. In order to give your dog a healthy and balanced diet, it is important to know which products to favor. However, it is all the more important to know which ones to avoid. With this in mind, here are the foods to be banned for your French Bulldog!

Chocolate

Chocolate is sweet, soft, delicious: it often makes a lot of people happy. But chocolate is also very dangerous for Frenchie. This information is undoubtedly the best known to canine lovers. The consumption of chocolate, even in small doses, only represents harmful side effects for dogs: nervous, cardiac, digestive disorders, intoxication or even death.

The toxicity of chocolate is explained by the strong presence of theobromine. This bitter compound found in chocolate is a toxic molecule. After ingestion, humans can easily eliminate this toxic component from their bodies, which is not the case with dogs.

There are two types of dog poisoning after consuming chocolate: acute and chronic. We talk about acute poisoning when the canine swallows a large dose all at once. Conversely, it is chronic intoxication when the dog has swallowed chocolate in small doses over a period of time.

Sugar-free candies and gum

Sugar-free chewing gum contains xylitol. Xylitol is a harmful food additive for the health of your Frenchie. It causes fatal hypoglycemia in dogs. The toxic doses of the dog are very low: this explains the impact of xylitol on his body.

Raw bread dough

It is true that bread dough is often eaten cooked. However, some dogs like to eat it raw: it is very dangerous!

The action of the yeasts in the dough creates alcohol. When the dog therefore consumes the raw bread dough, it is similar to if he had just had a glass of whiskey: we are talking about alcohol intoxication of the dog.

Giving your dog raw bread dough puts him at risk of distension or gastric obstruction. Indeed, the dough is fermented at the base. This fermentation continues in the belly of the canine after swallowing.

For all these reasons, we must avoid giving temptation to our four-legged friends and put all baking preparations out of their reach.

Macadamia nut

Macadamia nuts are arguably the least toxic food of all the ones we have mentioned in this article. However, it does remain harmful to the health of your French Bulldog.

For dogs, eating this dried fruit has always resulted in side effects such as indigestion or vomiting. After treatment, the symptoms gradually disappear. However, the molecule responsible for it remains unknown to this day.

Cheese with garlic or fine herbs

As a general rule, great care should be taken when feeding cheese to your dog. Indeed, at high consumption, cheese is harmful to its health.

First of all, cheese is very high in calories, in addition to being high in fat. It acts as a treat, and like any treat, excess leads to weight gain. This weight gain then directly impacts the health of Frenchie’s. For this reason, if it is difficult not to succumb to the whims of our little four-legged companions, one small dice a day will suffice.

Then, lactose, even in moderate doses present in cheese leads to poor digestion.

Lastly, its high salt content is harmful for dogs with heart or hyperactivity.

However, despite being delicious, it is strongly advised not to feed garlic cheeses due to the toxicity of this component.

Raw potato

Raw potatoes are a real danger to dogs.

The main components of potato are solanine, chaconin and starch. None of the things mentioned above are good for the health of scoundrels.

Solanine and chaconine are very toxic, while starch causes serious digestive problems in dogs.

You will understand: giving raw potatoes to scoundrels is to be avoided. However, when this vegetable is cooked, it is a great source of carbohydrate. Nevertheless, it is still not recommended to serve it, especially to heart animals and those who are fed with kibble.

Certain fruits and vegetables

Certainly, fruits and vegetables are good for your health. Yet for a Frenchie, there are some who are enemies to their health. Among them we can cite garlic, leek, shallot, onion and also avocado and grape.

The sulfur derivatives present in these foods, and especially in onions, have the particularity of eliminating the red blood cells present in the body. They do not lose their toxicity whether raw, cooked or even dehydrated.

Avocado, on the other hand, contains persin: a molecule that is very toxic to dogs and can cause digestive and heart problems.

Grapes are just as toxic to scoundrels. To this day, the molecule responsible for poisoning remains unknown. However, consuming grapes causes digestive problems and kidney problems in dogs.

Many foods are therefore beneficial for humans. This may prompt Frenchie owners to feed their pets, in the belief that they will benefit from the same. However, different organisms differ from food and products to humans and canines. In order to allow everyone to offer a healthy and balanced diet to their animal, knowledge of products that are harmful to the health of the latter is essential.
